The Term Reiki is made of two Japanese characters (kanji), namely 霊 rei ("spirit" or "soul") and 気 ki ("energy" or "life force"). Another popular western translation of 霊 気 reiki is "universal life energy", or simply "life", "the world." In using Reiki, body, mind and soul are seen as one, when it comes to illness and healing,. Neither the existence of ki, or a mechanism for manipulation are scientifically proven.
The Japanese Mikao Usui is the founder of what he called "Usui Reiki Ryoho". "Ryoho" is Japanese for "therapy". He developed this system, originally as a path to happiness, harmony and spiritual development. Mikao Usui gave his education concrete form, after a long search, period of fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama, around 1922.
How Reiki treatment works
It is claimed that during Reiki treatment, the Reiki practitioner acts as an intermediary for the transmission of universal life energy to the recipient. According to practitioners this energy will find its way through the body and mind of the recipient. The transmitted energy would have a nourishing and harmonizing effect on energy channels (nadis) and chakras. Passing this energy could occur through both direct hands-on, or at distance. This transmission of energy would exert a positive influence on disharmony in every part of the human being. It would have a comprehensive harmonizing effect on all energy which underlies both people, animals, plants, objects and situations. Reiki is used for symptoms at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level, and also to strengthen health and wellbeing. Treatment, or the laying of hands, is not seen by all followers as a cure, but also as an enjoyable experience without immediate treatment effect on any disease or condition.
Energy
The energy that is said to work in the Reiki method according to practitioners would be the foundation of the world. They believe that energy manifests at different levels (causal, mental and physical) and as such represents all objects and creatures. They say that energies can be blocked into a body, for example by not yet processed negative past experiences with physical and mental problems as a result. And they are capable eliminate blockages by laying on of hands. Reiki is seen as a cosmic energy and not as personal ; practitioners would only pass that power. The ability to transmit energy, for them all, albeit generally only to a small extent. During an "initiation", channels would be reopened which the energy is passed through.
The Usui system has three dedications. A dedication is an initiation or attunement ritual. In an initiation (= attunement ritual), the the pupil energy field vibration would be increased and the student gets te learn new techniques. At the dedication of the second and third degree student also symbols and Reiki mantra is been learned. The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (originally Japanese Reiki Association) does not work with masters. The third level there is called Shinpiden and traditionally this isn't the level at which one learns to teach the method. In the original Japanese association there are still some teachers, their level is called Shihan.
